Home Improvement: When You Should Hire a Pro

November 14, 2019

You’ve binged on enough home remodeling shows to know what to do when it comes to your own home improvement project. Unfortunately, things aren’t always as easy as they make them seem on TV. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes toil and labor that isn’t fun to watch. Before you jump into a new remodel by yourself, at least consider hiring a pro to help. Yes, there are some things you can do on your own. However, the majority of bigger projects should be handled by a professional to ensure your home’s safety.

Can You Motivate Yourself When Things Get Tough?

Home renovation projects can often take a turn for the worst. What you thought might have been a simple, one-day project could stretch out into a tedious week-long journey. You might stumble into roadblocks, such as finding termites, damaging a wall or ceiling, or even discovering a code violation.

Unfortunately, once you start a project, you can’t really stop until it’s complete (unless you want to live in a half-demoed house, that is). Therefore, if you see yourself getting too frustrated with obstacles, it’s probably best to hire a professional.

Do You Know What You’re Doing?

Looking up how to install new wiring on YouTube won’t really cut it. There are lots of jobs that require in-depth expertise and understanding. For example, would you know how to recognize faulty wiring that’s not up to code? Probably not. Leaving that type of issue uncorrected in your home could result in a deadly fire. However, a certified electrician can easily spot these problems and properly fix them.

Do You Have Enough Time?

Contrary to all those home improvement TV shows, remodels take more than a half hour to finish. You’ll need to put in serious hours to see your project through to completion. If you’re working 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day, the last thing you probably want to do when you get home, is to put on your hard hat and start hammering away.

Be realistic when planning a timeline. If you don’t think you’ll have enough hours in the day to finish in a timely manner, it might be wise it to hire a professional.

Do You Know How to Apply for Permits?

Let’s say you do have the tools and skills necessary for the job. That’s great! However, do you know how to apply for a permit from your local government office? Most people are completely in the dark about this often-complicated process. Most major projects, such as adding a room, installing wiring, moving a load-bearing wall, or adding new flooring, all require some kind of permit from your town’s building department. Not only that, but you might also need an inspection to ensure you’re doing the work correctly. In these cases, it’s best to hire a contractor to manage the project.

Do You Want to Sell Your Home Someday?

Buyers love upgraded features when shopping for new homes, but want them to look their best. In order to give your house the best appearance possible, you should trust a professional to do the job right. Having a well-completed project can increase your home’s value and maybe even start a bidding war amongst interested buyers.

At the end of the day, if you’ve got the skills, and you’re willing to put in the time and money needed to do the remodeling on your own, then get ready to tackle your projects head on!
